Adventure Awaits: Your Bucket List for Empty Nesters
Your nest is empty, you’re energized, and the world is calling! It’s the perfect time to create a bucket list with experiences you’ll cherish together. Let’s explore some exciting destinations, both in the USA and beyond, that cater to the young-at-heart couple:
Unveiling 5 of our favorites in the US that are not the major city stops:
- Grand Canyon, Arizona: We took a helicopter ride over the breathtaking South Rim—seeing those vast canyon walls from the air is something you’ll never forget. Then we landed for a boat tour down the Colorado River, followed by lunch right next to the cliffs. Whether you explore by foot, mule, or from above like we did, the Grand Canyon delivers epic adventure and views that stay with you forever.
- Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada: We loved golfing with those jaw-dropping alpine mountain views all around and spent some memorable time at the Ponderosa Ranch, soaking in that classic Western vibe. Whether it’s skiing in winter or relaxing in a hot tub with a view anytime, Lake Tahoe definitely earns its spot on the bucket list.
- St. Augustine, Florida:VAmerica’s oldest city, St. Augustine charms with its cobblestone streets, historic Spanish architecture, and laid-back coastal vibes. Wander through centuries-old forts and soak up the stories that fill every corner. Whether you’re strolling the waterfront or exploring hidden courtyards, this city mixes history and charm in a way that stays with you long after you leave.
- Maui, Hawaii: We surfed with sea turtles, snorkeled, and caught some of the most amazing sunsets you can imagine. Attending a luau was a highlight, too—such a fun way to experience the island’s culture. As we explored Maui, the views along the coast and beyond were stunning at every turn. It’s the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure—100% bucket list material.
- Acadia National Park, Maine: Cruising the scenic roads of Acadia, surrounded by dramatic coastline and lush forests, is an experience you won’t forget. Hiking its stunning trails reveals some of the East Coast’s best views, and finishing the day with fresh seafood in charming Bar Harbor feels like a true reward. For active couples craving a mix of adventure and natural beauty, Acadia is a bucket list destination that delivers in every way.
- Charleston, South Carolina: Wandering through Charleston’s historic city center feels like stepping back in time, with its charming pastel-colored homes and hidden gardens around every corner. A carriage ride down cobblestone streets lets you soak in the city’s stories while you savor mouthwatering Lowcountry cuisine that’s as rich in flavor as the history itself. Charleston’s blend of Southern charm and culture makes it a must-visit bucket list spot.
Venturing Overseas to some of our favorite places we love to visit:
- Kyoto, Japan: Kyoto completely stole our hearts. From quiet temple mornings to walking under rows of orange torii gates, it felt like we were stepping into something timeless. The bamboo forest in Arashiyama was one of those places that makes you stop and just breathe it all in. We even dressed up in kimonos for a day—an unforgettable way to connect with the city’s rich culture and feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
- Amalfi Coast, Italy: We loved cruising the winding roads that lead to Positano and Amalfi—each turn revealing jaw-dropping views of the coastline and colorful villages clinging to the cliffs. There’s something magical about the way the sea meets the hills here, and every stop felt like stepping into a postcard. Pure Italian charm and unforgettable scenery.
- Amsterdam, Netherlands: We biked like locals (well, we tried), floated through the canals at sunset, and spent hours getting lost in the side streets. Amsterdam has this perfect mix of history, art, and that easy-going charm. We also visited the moving Anne Frank House, which really brought history to life. Plus, the stroopwafels don’t hurt.
- Barcelona, Spain: From the wild, storybook buildings by Gaudí to long walks through the Gothic Quarter, Barcelona is full of personality. We spent our time eating through the city trying to take in all the color and energy this city throws at you. It’s vibrant, artistic, and full of life around every corner.
- Stockholm, Sweden: Stockholm surprised us in the best way. We loved hopping between the islands, walking the cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan, and relaxing by the water—because there’s water everywhere. It’s clean, stylish, and has this quiet cool about it that makes you want to stay longer than you planned.
- Nice, France: There’s something about Nice that makes you slow down—in the best way. We strolled the Promenade des Anglais, explored the colorful markets in Old Town, and just soaked in that French Riviera sun. Between the ocean breeze, the rosé, and the gelato, it’s one of those places that’s hard to leave.
